CHOICE Review
The Pratt Library (Baltimore) possesses one of the largest collections of song anthologies in the US, and since the beginning of this century their librarians have diligently indexed these anthologies. The present compilation is an outgrowth of this long-term project. The first volume contains a bibliography of 2,120 collections, as well as the song index proper. The second contains indexes of composers and larger works from which songs were drawn. Regrettably, the indexing is haphazard. Citations that identify both titles and first lines, which characterize Minnie Earl Sears's Song Index (1926; supplement, 1934), Desiree DeCharms and Paul Breed's Songs in Collections(1966), Patricia Pate Havlice's Popular Song Index(CH, Mar'76; supplements, 1978, 1984, 1989), and William D. Goodfellow's SongCite (CH, Mar'96; supplement, 1998), are not to be found. It is frustrating to find 16 entries for "Alma Mater" with no indication of school. Carelessness is also evident in the composer index; for instance, it is disconcerting to note that songs by Frederick and Carl Loewe are mixed. Yet this index has value as a reference source, since it analyzes collections of school songbooks, hymnals, and folksong anthologies, which are underrepresented in most standard song indexes. It can be used most profitably in large urban public libraries with a diverse clientele. D. Ossenkop; SUNY College at Potsdam
