CHOICE Review
Superior even to its fine companion anthology Something in Common (CH, Oct'91), also edited by Dobie (Univ. of Southern Louisiana), Uncommonplace is a rarity--a regional anthology that "loads every chink with ore." The range is generously wide; the selections, rich as delta soil. These poems are not just about Louisiana; Louisiana's richness has nurtured the sensibilities that, here, embrace the world. The quasi-poetics of the confessional poets are here, but (blessedly) far from dominant. These are not wanna-bes but poets practicing their craft, their art. The subjects are breathtakingly varied; the versification is, generally, relaxed formalist. Although Dobie's sampler approach (she includes 67 poets) teases, it entices the reader to look for more. A fine, satisfying collection for the academic library, the classroom, the den, bedtime reading, or for the poet. Recommended for all libraries looking for substantial and appealing poems to enliven their poetry holdings. This volume will not be a dustcatcher. J. N. Igo Jr.; San Antonio College
