CHOICE Review
The time between 1914 and 1945 has frequently been referred to as a second Thirty Years' War, encompassing as it did two world wars and an interwar period marked by frequent regional conflicts. A number of chronicles are available for both global conflicts, but this source, compiled by two British journalists, attempts to provide a chronological overview of the entire period. The bulk of the book covers the events of the two world wars: its three chapters include one for each of the global wars and one (about 20 pages in length) for the interwar years. In the chapters on the world wars, events are arranged by year. Students looking for details about the numerous small colonial wars fought between 1919 and 1939 will not find any help. Numerous insets, containing brief sketches on the major political and military figures, key events, and important weapons systems, make heavy use of photographs and maps detailing major campaigns. Larger libraries that already have more detailed reference sources for the two world wars will not need this volume, but smaller undergraduate and public libraries will find it helpful. ; Lamar University
