This book, latest in "The Routledge Who's Who" series, is designed for ready reference. Although the entries are not as detailed as those in Holger Herwig and Neil Heyman's Biographical Dictionary of World War I (CH, Feb'83), there are approximately twice as many. Bourne views the war as a world event and includes a significant number of non-Europeans and Americans, ranging from Abdullah ibn Hussein, leader of the Arab Revolt, to Japanese general Mitsuomi Kamio. The annotated bibliography in this relatively brief work does not compensate for the lack of bibliographic citations for each entry. Nor is there an index, but the cross-references are adequate. Recommended as a useful addition to the reference collections of public and academic libraries. D.
