Booklist Review
These 10 titles in the publisher's high/low romance line are suitable for personal reading by reluctant and poor readers. Though not first-person narratives, all reflect a woman's outlook, and each involves not only its heroine's love life but also her career choices construction worker (Chance), carpenter (Good-bye), assistant store manager (Second), mail carrier (Love to Share), park maintenance worker (Never), toll booth collector (Road), aspiring actress (Follow), and waitress/student (No Secrets). Minority protagonists turn up in two stories: Love in Bloom (black) and Kiss and Make Up (Asian); references to race are subtle within the texts but apparent in the cover illustrations. As in the horror series (see Brandner in Booklist 83:253 O 1 87), the formats are standardized: perfect-bound paperbacks, 4 1/2 by 5 1/2 inches, 59 to 62 pages in length, and four-color cover (but no internal) illustrations. According to the publisher, the stories have a 4.5-5.0 reading level. Gr. 8-12. SE.
